After overcoming the initial culture shock, certain human philosophers and alchemists wondered what they ate, those Critters that were similar to carnivorous species of Pangaia. Were all Critters herbivores ? Or did Wolfmen eat Rabbitfolk ?
It turns out they did not; as well as protein-rich crops, carnivorous Critters eat insects, the only form of non-intelligent animal life in Avalonia.
That is, until the humans came along. Then some Critters started eating them.
Such behaviour, while a useful tool in psychological warfare, is not without consequences. First of all, humans are obviously intelligent beings, and some Critter scholars suggest they may even be related to the long-lost Monkeymen of legend. Secondmost, and less existentially, eating humans seems to trigger some long-forgotten feral instinct in those who practice it. This in turn leads to predatory behaviour within Critter society. Metaphorically of course : uncontrolled rage and a propension for violent crime. Though some fear it will not be long before a Wolfwoman does eat a Rabbitman.
